They are so magnificent to gaze at, and command attention; with their noble and dignified, aristocratic, amazing colors!
These beautiful glass cups, remind me, of the rich blues, that were used during the Renaissance, to paint the Virgin Mary’s robes.
This striking ultramarine blue color, was the most expensive and prestigious blue during the Renaissance!
During the Middle Ages and through the Renaissance, from the 13th. century, and the 14th. century; also during the 15th. centuries and the 16th. centuries; In all of the early days, the use of this deep blue Lapis Lazuli color, was traditionally used in Christian iconography.
Back then, the blue pigment was made, by grinding up, rare, semi-precious stones called Lapis Lazuli, into a powder, made into ultramarine.
Natural ultramarine, was the most valuable blue pigment to paint with, during the Renaissance!
It was used for the most important artists. Often reserved for the clothing, robes, and cloaks, of the central figure of the painting; Especially the blue robe, worn by the Virgin Mary; as you see in many famous masterpieces!
To name a few of, the important artists, whom have painted the Virgin Mary, include, Wilton Diptych, Filippo Lippi, Hugo van der Shepherds, Pietro Perugino, Cosimo Rosselli; Raphael, Giovanni Bellini, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Giovanni Battista Salvi, Antonello da Messina, Giotto di Bondone, Guido Reni, Masaccio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and many more.
To name a few other famous artists, and masterpiece examples, such as, Michelangelo’s, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, or the ultramarine blues in, The Creation of Adam; Titian also made dramatic use of ultramarine, in the sky and draperies of Bacchus and Ariadne.
When the light passes through, these magical glass cups, they also remind me, of the beautiful stained glass windows, they used in Renaissance or medieval churches!
These glasses are astonishing, and remind me, of so many other very famous uses, of the bold and bright ultramarine blue colors!
I also, love to think of the ultramarine blue turban of, The Girl with a Pearl Earring, by Johannes Vermeer, and the blue cushion, in, Vermeer’s, Lady Standing at a Virginal, or the ultramarine apron, in The Milkmaid.
Vincent Van Gogh’s works were also richly draped in ultramarine and other bright vivid colors; in his skies, landscapes, vineyards, interior walls, self portraits, and more!
Many famous painter’s, made extensive use of the ultramarine color!
The natural ultramarine blue color, was thought to symbolize, fidelity and the feminine principle.
Sometimes, it would also be used to depict Angels, Angels cloaks and robes, and Renaissance or medieval, stained glass windows.
And of course, painting the skies a vibrant blue, as the color blue, is a visual link, with the color of the heavens.
We think you will enjoy and appreciate, this gift set even more, knowing a little bit of art history; while gazing at this captivating colored glass!
